The customer had been searching for a solution to the process of untangling retaining rings for some time. We therefore designed a solution and built a prototype consisting mostly of plastic parts printed on a 3D printer. We tested various product types on the prototype, and it proved to be functional. The separated rings fell at an average rate of 3 pieces per second onto the output conveyor belt, where it was then possible to track the parts with a camera, pick them up with a robot, and place them on a mandrel. A byproduct was another prototype of a special robot tool that allows up to ten separating rings to be picked up at once. The equipment has been operating without issues at the customer’s site from 2022 to the present day.
